He aha te kai a te rangatira, he kōrero, he kōrero, he kōrero

Hakihea / December 2020 Report from the Tiamana

1.0

To keep our whānau and beneficiaries informed of our activities as a Board we will be providing a monthly update on our Iwi website after each Board meeting. We hope that you will find this helpful.

1.1

The Board wishes to express our condolences to whānau who have lost loved ones over this last month.

1.2

The Rangitāne Tū Mai Rā Trust Board met on Monday, December 14 to farewell its three retiring trustees Jason Kerehi, Edward Pearse and Warwick Gernhoefer, whose contributions were acknowledged by the remaining Board members and staff. We also welcomed the four new trustees Te Ataahia Hurihanganui, Paige Bradey, Hinekura Reiri and Piri Te Tau. With them comes another set of skills and passion to advance the work of the Trust and to be your voice.

The Board also wishes to congratulate those whānau who have experienced success over the last month particularly; Matua Manahi Paewai who received an Honorary Doctorate in Education from Massey University, Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Tamaki Nui A Rua who made it to the finals of the school kapahaka in Blenheim in 2021, and to those of our kaumātua who celebrated significant birthdays especially Aunty Kate Apanui who turned 89 in November.

1.4.1

AGM 2020 – Overall, we were able to conduct our AGM within our planned time frame even though we faced several issues that threatened to derail it. We have received constructive feedback on our processes which we can continue to learn from.

1.4.2

Chairs meeting – On Sunday after our AGM the five chairs made up of the Trust, Investments, Fisheries, Te Rūnanga o Wairarapa and Tamaki Nui A Rua where we worked further on the values of our strategic plan.

The four key outcomes from that meeting were:

  1. All attending boards confirm the desire to investigate and potentially move towards a united structure
  2. Mihirangi will provide a document researched paper on how other Iwi/PSGE have handled this
  3. Tū Mai Rā will collate the kōrero from a shared values session to be the basis of a greater Rangitāne Vision and Values paper
  4. With this information and data, a round of Hui ā Iwi will be held to present the information and a set of actions.

1.4.3

Database – A learning from the AGM told us that our Database was in dire need of updating. We had over 800 duplicate registrations and worked hard to eliminate these. It is why when a 17-year-old is nearing their 18th birthday the Trust will notify them and or their parents or guardian to say they will need to re-register as an adult. Their details will remain deactivated until this is done. The Board has agreed to run a registration details update competition of our beneficiaries where all updated registrations will be eligible to win a $50 grocery voucher. The winner will be notified in the website newsletter.

1.4.4

Workplan – We have devised a work plan for the remainder of the year so you can see what we are doing for you.  We hope you find this useful.

1.4.5

Sponsorships – We have set aside some putea to support various whānau group activities in 2021. This year our priority is Te Matatini.

1.4.6

CPS (Cultural and Political Services) – Our CPS team continues to meet monthly to discuss several activities that include openings of projects, pōwhiri and tangihanga.  We require more men to train in kaikōrero to support Matua Manahi and Mike and more women to train in karanga to support our kaikaranga. Your support and contributions are very welcome. You can contact us via email at info@tumaira.iwi.nz or phone 0800 8862472.

1.4.7

Staff – Our small team of staff remains busier than ever as we move toward formalising our processes and workstreams. Work spirit remains high as they look forward to our rest over Christmas.

As your Board we wish you all a safe and happy Christmas and New Year – and remember it’s not how much you spend on each-other but who you spend it with!
